Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Eastern Regional Minister, on Thursday reiterated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government's commitment to the development of democratic traditions.
He, therefore, appealed to supporters of the party to exercise maximum restrain no matter the provocations from their political opponents because the NDC government, under President Atta Mills, was focussed.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said this when he joined a group of supporters of the party in a "keep-fit" walking exercise through the principal streets of Akwatia in the region.
On the Akwatia re-run parliamentary election, he appealed to the people of the area to vote massively for Mr Ahmed Baba Jamal, the NDC's candidate who is now the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister.
The Regional Minister, who is also the National Organiser of the NDC, told the people of Akwatia that the election was crucial for their future developments.
He urged the electorate to vote massively for Mr Jamal to enable him contribute his quota towards the development of Akwatia.
He reminded the people of Akwatia that it was the NDC government that introduced the law on small scale mining and promised that the state would streamline its implementation.
He called on the people of Akwatia to put aside their political differences to support Mr Jamal, who could use his position both as a Minister of State and a Member of Parliament (MP) to fight for more development projects for the area.
Mr Jamal assured the people that if they voted for him, he would do all he could to have the Akwatia bridge rehabilitated and work to improve the roads in the Akwatia constituency.
He said, he was from a poor background and therefore would always work towards the improvement of the living conditions of the deprived in the society.
Mr Jamal recounted that before his appointment to public office, he had used his personal resources to sponsor nine youth from the area to the University.
The Akwatia re-run would take place on August 18, 2009 in only six polling stations where the elections were disrupted during the December 2008 parliamentary poll.
Other candidates contesting the seat are Dr Kofi Asare of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Samuel Agyei of the Convention People's Party (CPP), and two independent candidates, Mr Basil Ahiable and Mr Samuel Abrokwah.
