Maoists blew up a police station in Koraput district in India's eastern state of Orissa besides setting ablaze some vehicles in the naxal-infested area, about 530 km from here, police said Monday.
About 100 ultras, including women, attacked the police station at Baipariguda late Sunday night and forced the five police personnel posted there to surrender at gun point before blowing up the building, they said.
"The Maoists laid siege to the area for about two hours and triggered three explosions in Baipariguda police station premises," DIG (south-west range) Sanjeev Kumar Panda told PTI over phone, adding that the attackers did not cause any harm to the police personnel.
Though there was no weapon at the police station located on Jeypore-Malkangiri road, the ultras armed with sophisticated weapons took away three country-made guns which had earlier been seized by the police, police said.
They also set ablaze two jeeps and three motor-cycles and smashed a very high frequency transmitter to snap communication links with the police station before leaving the place, Panda said.
Maoists also blew up a police outpost at Ramgiri, about 30 km from Baipariguda, after driving out two police personnel present inside the building at gun point, police said.
The attackers left a note at the site registering their opposition to the moves to set up anti-naxal Cobra battalion at Sunabeda in Koraput district, police said.
They also accused the government of pursuing anti-tribal policies and alleged harassment of innocent people by the security force in the name of anti-naxal operations in the area, they said.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and elite anti-naxal Special Operation Group (SOG) were rushed to the area for conducting combing operations, the police said.
Additional police force was also sent from Koraput District headquarter.
Movement of security forces during the night was affected due to obstacles put up by the ultras by felling trees on the roads. The ultras were also suspected to have laid landmines.
