The Minority NPP in Parliament on Monday issued a
warning to the NDC administration to take steps to protect the security of its members.
"The group will further like to call on the leadership of the NDC to admonish its supporters to halt their harassment, humiliation and annihilation of persons perceived to be supporters of the NPP, and take notice that if no steps are taken to stem the tide of the intimidation and harassment, we the minority will advice ourselves," it said.
They further called on the Minister of the Interior, Mr Cletus Avoka, to deal with the "re-emergence of lawlessness, insecurity and instability" and "gross disregard and disrespect for fundamental rights and personal freedoms of the citizens".
These were contained in a press statement read by Mr. William Ofori Boafo, NPP Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, at a press briefing at Parliament House on behalf of the Minority.
The NPP made reference to various acts of violence and conflicts in Tamale, Agbogbloshie in Accra, Bawku, the mysterious child deaths in abandoned vehicles, alleged attacks on a Kumasi resident, known as Appiah Stadium by a known NDC person and another attack on Colonel Kwadwo Damoah of the Ghana Armed Forces, who had his residence attacked for allegedly commenting on the unprofessional intrusions into the life and work of the Ghana Armed Forces, which could compromise the neutrality of the Army.
Mr Boafo told the press that the NPP minority group had "observed with utter dismay and concern the alleged deliberate harassment, assault and maltreatment meted out to innocent supporters of the NPP by some members of the NDC with impunity".
He urged the Interior Minister to intensify investigations into the occurrences with a view to identifying and prosecuting all offenders without fear or favour.
He also tasked him to, from time to time, report on the state of affairs in the conflict areas and justify the continued imposition of curfew and other restrictions on the movement of the citizenry to Parliament.
Mr Boafo said it was important for the Minister to assure the public about their safety and security.
