The Sudanese government said on Wednesday it hopes to turn a new page in relations with the United States following the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that its government had noticed the spirit of change that characterized the new U.S. administration, expressing its satisfaction over the spirit and its readiness to respond to it.
"The government is ready to open a new page of relations between Sudan and the United States of America based on mutual respect and on respect of the sovereignty of states and their peoples," the statement noted.
It said the Sudanese government congratulated President Obama on the popularity he enjoys among the American people and the positive spirit that characterized his speech, his keenness to change the hostile attitude of the previous U.S. administration, which targeted other nations, violated their sovereignty and used international institutions to issue unjust resolutions based on double standards.
The statement also criticized the belligerence of the former U.S. administration under President George W. Bush.
It hoped that the new U.S. administration would overcome the hostility in dealing with the Islamic world, including Sudan.
