Security personnel, who would be assigned to ensure law and order in the Northern Region on voting day, have been asked to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties.
They were also charged to maintain peace, particularly in volatile areas of the region to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections on December 7.
Mr. Mustapha Sanah, Executive Director of Northern Ghana Aid (NOGAID), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Tamale, made the call on Wednesday at the Kamina Barracks in Tamale.
This was after he presented food items to the Northern Regional Police Command and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces for security personnel who would be assisting in the electoral process on December 7.
These included ten bags of rice, 20 bags of maize and 30 packets of energy drinks for the Police and the same quantity to personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Mr. Sanah said "Security personnel deployed for the elections scheduled for Sunday in the Northern Regions of Ghana should use the opportunity to reassure their institutions' readiness to demystify the mutual suspicion between them and the public to foster mutual relationships".
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ofosu Mensah-Gyeabour, Northern Regional Police Commander received the items on behalf of the beneficiaries.
He gave the assurance that the security agencies in the region would provide maximum security to ensure peaceful elections.
DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour warned that security personnel would deal ruthlessly with persons who would create confusion or flout electoral laws.
He said peace in the country was paramount and called on individuals, the media and leaders of political parties to help ensure peace during Election 2008.
DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour commended the NGO for the gesture and said it would help to boost the morale of security personnel who would be working on the voting day.
Lieutenant Colonel Joe Aphour, Commanding Officer of the Sixth infantry Battalion (6BN), said the military was ready to support the police to ensure peace and order on December 7.
He appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel by observing electoral laws to ensure peaceful elections.
