A total of 1,060 Parliamentary Candidates have filed nominations to contest for seats in the 230 Legislature on December 7 polls, out of which 957 are male and 103 female, the Electoral Commission (EC) disclosed on Wednesday.
Ninety-five are contesting as Independent Candidates.
Statistics from the EC Research and Monitoring Department made available to the Ghana News Agency in Accra indicate that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are contesting in 229 Constituencies.
The NPP is contesting for 21 out of the 22 Constituencies in the Western Region whiles the NDC is contesting for 38 out of 39 Constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) is contesting in 206 Constituencies; Peoples National Convention (PNC), 129; the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), 108; Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), 49; Reformed Patriotic Democrat (RPD), ten; and New Vision Party (NVP), four.
The rest are; Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) two seats; Ghana National Party (GNP), one seat and 95 Independent Candidates.
The statistics of independent parliamentary candidates indicates that; 18 are contesting in Ashanti Region; 16 in the Northern Region; Eastern and Volta regions 12 each; Greater Accra, nine; Western Region, eight; Central Region and Brong Ahafo, seven each; Upper East and West regions, three each.
The regional statistics shows; 175 are contesting for 39 seats in Ashanti Region; 142 contesting for 26 seats in the Northern Region; 122 contesting for 27 seats in the Greater Accra Region and 120 contesting for Eastern region's 28 parliamentary seats.
The rest are; 112 filed to contest for 24 seats in the Brong Ahafo region; 105 aspirants contesting for 22 seats in the Volta region; 90 contesting for 22 seats in the Western region; 79 slotting it out for 19 seats in the Central region; 63 for 13 seats in the Upper East region and 52 for ten seats in the Upper West region.
Greater Accra region recorded both the highest and the lowest number of contestants for a Constituency - Ayawaso East Constituency recorded nine and Abokobi/Madina Constituency recorded two.
In Election 2004, out of a total of 953 Parliamentary Candidates who contested 126 contested as independent candidates; the gender figures indicates that 104 were female and 849 male.
Election 2004 statistics available to GNA indicates that Ashanti region recorded the highest number of contestants-158 whilst Upper West region recorded the lowest number of contestants 40.
In Election 2004; the highest number of candidates for a constituency was seven in the Upper West Akim in the Eastern region whilst the lowest was two recorded at Akrofrom and Ahafo Ano South in the Brong Ahafo regions.
