The Zozo Championship is the first and only tournament sanctioned by the PGA Tour which is played in Japan. It was first played in 2019 and won by golf legend Tiger Woods – with his triumph equalling the all-time record (at the time) of 82 PGA Tour victories, held by Sam Snead.
Since then, Patrick Cantlay (2020), Hideki Matsuyama (2021), Keegan Bradley (2022) and Collin Morikawa (2023) have emerged as the winners of the Zozo Championship.
Morikawa will return to Japan to defend his title this year: “I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year since my win at the Zozo Championship,” said the American, who is of Chinese-Japanese descent.
“It was incredible to win the Zozo Championship. The achievement meant the world as the tournament is one of the few events that are highlighted on my schedule at the start of every new season.
“Being half Japanese, I have a strong connection with the people of Japan, and they have shown a lot of support whenever I compete in the country. I look forward to coming back and seeing our fans in large numbers once again to support me and the players.”
One of the top players looking to dethrone Morikawa will be Xander Schauffele, who won two majors this year: the PGA Championship and the Open Championship.
“After enjoying those two major wins, it will be a big goal of mine to contend for this year’s Zozo Championship title,” said the American, who has relatives living in Japan.
“Winning the tournament will certainly put a bow on my 2024 season and it is no secret that I enjoy being in Japan due to my family ties and competing in front of our Japanese fans, who are amongst the most knowledgeable and respectful fans in the world. I look forward to seeing everyone in Narashino and hopefully ending the week with the trophy in my hands.”
The Narashino Country Club has a 7041-yard par 70 course, and the purse for the Zozo Championship is US $8.5million.
