The previous round in Singapore saw McLaren’s Lando Norris secure a dominant victory, as he continued to chase down Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen’s lead over second-placed Norris stands at 52 points, while McLaren have claimed a 41-point advantage over Red Bull at the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings – with Ferrari just a further 34 points behind.
“I’m doing my best every weekend. I’m trying to get the most points I can every weekend,” said Norris on his title ambition. “[That] includes fastest lap and things like that. But if Max keeps finishing second, there’s nothing more I can do. So [the aim is to] just focus on myself and focus on us as a team. That’s it.”
Further down the grid, Red Bull’s sister team RB have announced that Daniel Ricciardo will be replaced by Liam Lawson for the remainder of the season, with the New Zealand driver looking forward to returning to the grid after his ‘super sub’ performances for AlphaTauri (now RB) last season when Ricciardo broke his hand.
“Obviously I’m very happy, but it’s six rounds left in the season, so I’m coming in at a difficult time,” he acknowledged. “It’s going to be a very challenging point. All these [drivers] have done three quarters of a season now, so I have to try and compete with that – at tracks that I haven’t done [driven at] as well.”
The US Grand Prix will also be a key race for Alpine, who have failed to score any points in the previous three rounds, and have fallen behind Williams in the Constructors’ Championship. Only Kick Sauber-Ferrari (zero points) have fared worse than Alpine (13 points) so far this season.
“We are just not quick or competitive enough at the moment,” said driver Pierre Gasly, who added: “The reality is three races ago [in Zandvoort] we were ninth place and at the last three races we have been far away from the top 10. We have to find some performance and there is a lot of work ahead of us to improve our current level.”
