Black Stars winger Joseph Paintsil netted his tenth goal of the season for LA Galaxy during their 4-2 defeat against Portland Timbers in the MLS on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
Despite the loss, Paintsil’s performance continues to underline his importance to the Western Conference leaders.
The Ghanaian international, who joined LA Galaxy in February, struck in the 59th minute to give his team hope after they trailed 3-1. His goal, initially ruled offside but awarded after a video review, brought the Galaxy within striking distance at 3-2. This was Paintsil’s ninth goal in the MLS and his tenth across all competitions this season.
However, Portland Timbers, who had taken control of the game early, restored their two-goal advantage in the 80th minute when Felipe Mora found the net, sealing the result for the hosts.
Portland started brightly, with goals from Evander and Jonathan Rodriguez putting them 2-0 up before Gabriel Pec pulled one back for LA Galaxy just before halftime. Evander struck again in the 51st minute, giving Portland a 3-1 lead before Paintsil’s reply.
Despite the defeat, LA Galaxy remain at the top of the Western Conference with 55 points, already securing their place in the play-offs. Paintsil’s impressive form, with 16 goal contributions in the MLS, has made him one of the standout performers for the California-based club this season.
With the playoffs approaching, LA Galaxy will be hoping Paintsil can continue his scoring streak and lead them deep into the postseason.
