Matchday 1 is coming your way.
Clashes pitting AC Milan and Inter Milan against Liverpool and Manchester City respectively will headline the first Matchday of the UEFA Champions League's new format, spread over Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 September 2024.
Tuesday’s focus will fall on AC Milan hosting Liverpool at the San Siro – a clash replete with European football history, not least from the club’s famous Champions League final clashes in 2005 and 2007.
“The first thing to say is it is a very challenging draw but also a very exciting one and more important than anything, we are part of it – which means there is a lot to look forward to and also a lot of work to be done,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who has made an impressive start to his tenure at the Merseyside club.
Real Madrid will also begin the defence of their European crown on Tuesday, as they welcome VfB Stuttgart to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Juventus will battle PSV in Turin, and former European champions Aston Villa return to the top table of continental football for the first time in decades with a visit to Switzerland’s Young Boys.
Wednesday is headlined by a repeat of the 2023 Champions League final, as Manchester City and Inter Milan meet at the Etihad Stadium, but Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi is looking forward to the challenge.
“The Champions League has always been a prestigious competition where we still want to shine we have a difficult fixture list but, like in the past, we are ready to face these big sides.
“Fighting it out in difficult grounds, over the last few years, has given us a bigger awareness of our strength: we have good games against great and competitive sides, but I am certain that my lads will give everything to continue our journey.”
Thursday features German champions Bayer Leverkusen away to Feyenoord, Arsenal travel to Bergamo for a clash with Atalanta, Atletico Madrid host RB Leipzig in the Spanish capital, and Barcelona will face Monaco at Stade Louis II.
