Sunderland are reportedly making strides in their pursuit of Lens' defensive midfielder, Salis Abdul Samed, with a loan deal in the works.
According to the French publication L’Equipe, negotiations between the Black Cats and the Ghanaian international are progressing positively. Sunderland appears to have outpaced Saint Etienne, who had previously shown interest in Samed, in their bid to bring him to the Stadium of Light.
In response, Saint Etienne has shifted their attention to Pierre Ekwah as an alternative target.
Samed, 23, played a key role for Lens last season, making 35 appearances and helping the team secure Champions League qualification. Over his tenure at Lens, he has featured in 72 matches, contributing one goal and one assist. His performances earned him a contract extension, reportedly with a salary increase.
Sunderland supporters are now keenly awaiting the finalization of the deal, which would bolster their midfield options for the ongoing season.
