The inauguration of the newly created Adaklu-Anyigbe District Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, November 30, has been called off, local municipal authorities said on Monday.
A statement signed by the Ho Municipal Co-ordinating Director Mr E.K. Degbor and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) just before close of work on Monday November 29, said further developments would be communicated to the public.
Earlier on Monday the Chiefs and people of the Adaklu Traditional Area, led by their paramount chief, Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, held a press Conference at Adaklu-Waya, calling for the suspension of the inauguration to allow for further consultations.
Consequently all citizens of Adaklu resident in and around Kpetoe were asked to return home in their own interest.
Togbe Gbogbi said the procedure adopted by the Ho District Assembly in inviting him to the inauguration was improper and constituted an attempt to sideline him and his elders from the ceremony.
He said Nene Nuer Keteku III, Konor of Agotime traditional area did not invite him to the inauguration even though he invited his counterpart from the Ziope traditional area, which also forms part of the new district.
Togbe Gbogbi said under the circumstances and given the contradictions in information received regarding the venue and time for the ceremony, it was not safe for him, his elders and subjects to be present at the inauguration.
He said though Adaklu was in total support of the new district, it was appalled at the manner in which officialdom had conspired to thwart the decision to site the capital at Adaklu-Waya, thus undermining the longstanding peace between the two traditional areas.
Togbe Gbogbi was also critical of the political leadership in the region whom he accused of disrespect for the Chiefs in the region and for "deliberately driving a wedge between the region and President John Agyekum Kufuor".
"We have nothing against the President but those who represent him in the region are those that must be watched", he said.
