President Kufuor on Tuesday pledged 300 million cedis toward the construction of a hostel for the Bunkprugu Senior Secondary School in the newly created Bunkprugu/Yunyoo District in the Northern Region.
He said in addition one of the Senior Secondary Schools in the district yet to be selected would be upgraded among the 25 schools in the country.
President Kufuor made pledge in response to an appeal made by the chiefs at a durbar held in his honour on the second day of a five-day official tour of the Region at Bunkpurugu.
He addressed similar durbars at Gushiegu and Karaga, where a milling enthusiastic crowd cheered him.
President Kufuor said the new districts were created to accelerate socio-economic development of all parts of the country.
He said the Government's policy was to establish a model senior secondary with modern infrastructure and facilities estimated at about 16 billion cedis.
President Kufuor said other infrastructure and facilities to be provided for the new districts were the rehabilitation of the roads in the districts capital and major roads, provision of a district hospitals, potable water, connection to the National Electricity Grid for efficient and effective supply of power and telecommunication facilities.
He said the security at Bunkpurugu would be improved by posting more Police Personnel and Immigration Officers, who would be well equipped with logistics to curb the high incidence of smuggling in the area, which is a border town and could be developed into a gateway to Ghana from Togo.
The chiefs commended the Government for creating the districts that would enhance their development.
However, they appealed to the Government for improvement in the road network, electricity and provision of potable water, district hospitals and the upgrading of a senior secondary school in each district.
