The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has congratulated Messrs Kwesi Nyantakyi, president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Ben Nunoo Mensah, president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) for their electoral victories last week.
Mr. Nyantakyi was last week elected onto the Executive Council of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), whilst Mr Nunoo Mensah was elected president of the GOC.
A statement from SWAG and signed by its president, Kwabena Yeboah, said Mr. Nyantakyi’s steady progress in Africa and world football was a demonstration of his commitment and dedication to the cause of football development in Ghana and the globe at large.
The statement said Mr. Nyantakyi’s leadership qualities and affable personality had ensured his progress on all fronts.
"We have never doubted your competence in football administration and your success at the CAF and FIFA level give credence to the fact that, you have over the years learnt the dynamics of the trade to become a formidable force," the statement added. According to SWAG, Mr. Nyantakyi must use his influence and contacts at the global level to help develop football in Africa and Ghana in particular.
"As an association we will be monitoring your contribution to the development of football on the continent and Ghana especially. In congratulating Mr Nunoo Mensah on his victory, the statement said the new GOC president's unblemished commitment to the development of sports in Ghana was what ensured his success at last Wednesday's GOC elections in Accra.
"As president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), you worked hard to lift the image of the sport on both the local and international scene. “Today weighlifting is regarded as one of the strong and emerging sport in the country and this cannot be mentioned without your invaluable contribution for which SWAG recently honoured you as Chairman of the Year.
"It was therefore no surprise when heads of the various federations endorsed your candidacy by voting for you as head of the country's Olympic Movement. "You must, however, bring all parties on board to form a united front at the GOC to ensure success of your administration and the Olympic Movement in Ghana in general,” SWAG stated. The statement called on all stakeholders within the GOC to put the elections behind them and come together to develop and promote sports in Ghana.
