City were eliminated from the competition on away goals after a 3-1 defeat on the night against the Ligue 1 leaders proved enough for Leonardo Jardim's side to progress following a 6-6 aggregate draw over the two legs.

But despite City travelling to Stade Louis II needing only to defend their two-goal first-leg lead to qualify for the quarterfinals, centre-half Kompany was not included in the matchday squad by Guardiola.

Having also been left out of the 18-man squad for last Saturday's FA Cup quarterfinal win at Middlesbrough after travelling to the Riverside Stadium with Guardiola's team, sources have claimed that Kompany now expects to be one of a number of players cast aside by the City manager in the summer as he attempts to rebuild his squad at the Etihad Stadium.

Vincent Kompany has only started five games for Manchester City this season.

Kompany's inability to overcome a series of muscular injuries in recent seasons has seen his involvement diminish under Guardiola, with the 30-year-old making just six appearances in all competitions this campaign and none since the 3-0 FA Cup fourth round victory at Crystal Palace on Jan. 28.

But the Belgium international has been fit and available for selection for the past two weeks and his continued absence from Guardiola's plans has raised eyebrows among senior figures and within the squad.

In the wake of City's Champions League exit, Guardiola's team selection and tactics have come under heavy scrutiny, particularly his decision to name an attacking lineup for a game which City needed only to draw to go through.

And although Kompany's fitness issues would have made it a bold decision to play him from the start against Monaco, Guardiola's decision to ignore the defender's big-game experience by not even including him among the substitutes has been cited by City sources as an example of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach's single-minded approach.

Kompany, who arrived at City from Hamburg prior to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan's takeover in 2008, faces an uncertain future at the club alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Joe Hart, the England goalkeeper currently on loan at Torino.
