Thirty-nine South Koreans fled strife-torn Libya Monday, the latest in a series of evacuation of South Korean nationals, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.
The group of South Korean employees at a construction company left the northern African nation via land and sea routes along with 196 foreign nationals, leaving only 64 South Koreans there.
The South Korean government closely cooperated with multinational forces in Libya in helping evacuate its nationals, according to the foreign ministry in Seoul.
The United Nations Security Council earlier this month adopted a resolution authorizing "all necessary measures" to protect Libyans amid bloody confrontation between anti-government rebels and forces loyal to the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, prompting U.S.-led airstrikes on the pro-government forces.
