Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, has urged the media to show interest in the impending District Level Election as was done during the Presidential and Parliamentary election.
Dr Afari-Gyan made the call at a workshop in Ho to map out strategies for public education on the new laws governing the election and the need for the public to show interest in it.
It was organized by the EC in collaboration with KAB Governance Consult for personnel of the EC, National Commission on Civic Education and the Information Services Department.
Dr Afari-Gyan observed that the lack of interest by the media in the district level election because of their non-partisan political coloration constituted a serious challenge to the popularity of the election.
He said the expectation was that the media especially the FM radio stations would help create public awareness towards those elections as
a social responsibility.
He said the district level elections were more challenging to organize than the Presidential and Parliamentary elections as extreme care was
needed in printing ballot papers because of their complicated nature.
Dr Afari-Gyan said this year's district level elections would cost less to organize than the previous ones because of the changes brought
about by the new laws governing the elections.
