Mr Zakari Bukari Anaba, District Chief Executive (DCE), for Tano South, has appealed to the Ministry of Education to include civic education as a subject in the curriculum of Junior High Schools.
He said this would enable students to be abreast with the constitution of the country.
Mr Anaba said this during a one-day quiz competition, organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), for Junior High Schools in Bechem on the Constitution of Ghana.
He said the Commission was tasked to ensure that Ghanaians "see the Constitution as the fundamental law that provides the best guarantee for the exercise of the individual and collective freedom and rights".
The DCE assured the Commission of the government's readiness to resource it to function effectively.
Mrs Cynthia Anima Boadu, Tano South District Director of the NCCE, said the quiz competition was aimed at creating and promoting, through civic
education, the understanding and commitment to democracy.
It was also to inculcate in the students, awareness of their rights and obligations, including the responsibility of defending the constitution against all forms of abuse and violations, she added.
Six Junior High Schools took part in the competition with Bechem Presbyterian placing first and taking home a wall clock, two copies of the
1992 Constitution booklet, three 'T' Shirts and a certificate of participation.
Bechem Islamic and Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) schools placed second and third respectively and took home three 'T' Shirts, two copies of
Constitution and certificates each as their prizes.
