Journalists have been asked to be circumspect in their reportage to avoid conflicts during the District Level Election scheduled for December 28 this year.
Mr. David Adenzi Kanga, Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Finance Administrator, who made the called, advised the media to be abreast with regulations guiding the elections adding that the EC was being guided by laws and regulations.
He made the appeal when the EC in collaboration with the Ministry of local Government and Rural Development organized a media dialogue on the theme: "Improving Citizen Participation in the 2010 District Level Election Through Enhanced Knowledge" at Bolgatanga.
He said apart from the Commission's strategic orientation, it had mainstreamed conflict resolution and management in all its activities to enable it conduct conflict free elections.
Mr. Kanga said the EC had put in place reforms towards smooth elections and that considering the change in country's population size, new settlements and administrative districts, a fresh look was being given to the demarcation and alignment of electoral areas.
He said a 15-member committee had had been formed to restructure unit committees to consist of only five members without appointed members.
Mr Kanga explained that this would reduce the membership of unit committee from 225,000 to 30,000 elected persons.
He said mounting of campaign platform has been liberalized to allow individuals seeking election as Assembly Members to do so as against the previous years when the EC was responsible for mounting platforms.
Mr Kanga said the EC would open its doors for the media to access information on the elections.
