Mr Cletus Abang, the Deputy Director of National Commission for Civic Education(NCCE) in charge of the Upper East Region, has said appeals made by stakeholders to get more support for women to be elected to leadership positions, especially at the District Assembly level, was not yielding good results.
He said this at a forum organised by the Commission to increase women's participation in governance at Tongo in the Talensi-Nabdam District.
The forum, which attracted some women's groups, was aimed at encouraging them to stand for the upcoming District Assembly elections and to also encourage women groups to vote for their
fellow women.
Mr Abang said women had all the qualities to enable them contest and win elections to leadership positions.
He said in many instances women were not able to contribute to the policies and programmes at the District Assembly level for implementation since they were not represented properly.
Mr Emmanuel Abesoke, Principal Civic Educator, NCCE, speaking on the topic, 'Women's Involvement in Governance in the Upper East Region', said out of the 230 Parliamentarians, only 20 of them were women.
He said the situation was worse in the Region where with the 293 electoral areas in the Region, only 23 women had been elected to the Assembly.
