Britain's Foreign Office warned Sunday there was a "specific threat" against Westerners in Somaliland and urged all British nationals to leave the breakaway territory.
British diplomats had previously advised citizens to avoid the autonomous region of Somalia due to high levels of criminal and terrorist activity, especially kidnappings.
"We are now aware of a specific threat to Westerners in Somaliland, and urge any British nationals who remain there against our advice to leave immediately," the Foreign Office said in a statement.
"As our travel advice continues to make clear, kidnapping for financial or political gain, motivated by criminality or terrorism, remains a threat throughout Somalia."
The travel warning comes three days after Britons were urged to leave Benghazi, Libya.
France's ongoing military campaign against Islamist rebels in northern Mali and a deadly hostage standoff at an gas processing facility in Algeria earlier this month have thrust terrorist activity
in North Africa into the spotlight.
