Queenmothers in the Bono Region have attended a one-day workshop on disinformation and misinformation.
The workshop formed part of efforts to address the growing challenge of disinformation and misinformation, which has the potential to undermine democratic institutions, social cohesion and effective leadership.
It was on the theme, “Combating Disinformation and Misinformation: The role of Queenmothers in Ensuring Good Governance,” and organised jointly by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office and the Bono Regional chapter of the National Queenmothers Ghana.
Opening
The President of the Bono Queenmothers Platform and Paramount Queenmother of the Drobo Traditional Area, Nana Yaa Ansua III, in her address, described disinformation and misinformation as a major threat to security in communities.
“I am particularly grateful to our development partners KAS and the resource personnel for agreeing to come and take us through this workshop aimed at equipping us in our bid to combat disinformation and misinformation in our localities.
One of the major threats to our security in the localities is this disinformation and misinformation, and I am excited we are being trained about it so we can impact our various localities,” she said.
The Programmes Director of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Ghana Office, Dr Joseph Darmoe, explained that the workshop was to provide the queenmothers with the necessary capacity to address issues of disinformation and misinformation in the echo system.
“We want them to understand their roles and how to properly manage relevant information so that there would be peace and harmony in the various communities”, he said.
Legacy
The Ambassador-Designate of the Republic of Ghana to the Czech Republic, Mrs Theresah Adjei-Mensah, who chaired the event, entreated the queenmothers to ensure they left lasting legacies in their localities.
“You need to thrive to make impacts in your communities just as some queenmothers did in the past.
You are the custodians of our traditions, and a lot is expected from you,” she stated.
Dr James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, who was one of the facilitators for the workshop, admonished the queenmothers to ensure they stayed away from politics.
“The office you hold is political, but it is not partisan in nature, as we have seen in contemporary times.
So for you to be able to win the respect and honour deserving of that office, it is important to stay above the fray and do what is dignifying,” he told the participants.
