The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has declared the upcoming by-election a “done deal” for his party, expressing strong optimism of victory.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, August 23, Mr. Bediako acknowledged that the NDC faced an initial delay in kick-starting its campaign due to internal primaries and the helicopter crash in the Ashanti region, which claimed the lives of eight people.
However, he insisted that momentum has since shifted in their favour.
“We didn’t start our campaign early as compared to the other side because of the tragedy that hit us and the primaries we had to go through. They didn’t, so we lost some time. But I can assure you that the tables have turned completely, and they know it. God willing, it is a done deal for me and the NDC,” he stated.
The race will see Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency treasurer, face off against Mr. Bediako, who doubles as the NDC’s constituency secretary.
Meanwhile, Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has expressed confidence that the NPP will retain the seat to honour the late Ernest Kumi, the former MP whose passing triggered the by-election.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled the Akwatia by-election for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
