Member of Parliament for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, has expressed confidence in the ability of the Ghana Police Service to maintain peace and order during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, August 21, the MP, who also serves on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, asserted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno has demonstrated competence in handling high-security operations in the past and is well placed to deliver a peaceful exercise.
According to him, the IGP’s background and track record give assurance that the security arrangements will be effective.
“I am very confident. We know the IGP; he has been part of the police system. He has risen through the ranks, been Operations Commander, Deputy IGP and a whole lot. We know the key roles he played in Assin North and the like. His assurance is something that I, as a member of the Defence Committee, am quite confident that we may not record any nasty incident during the Akwatia by-election. I am confident in the Ghana Police Service. They will give us a better outcome,” he stated.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled the Akwatia by-election for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi. Printing of ballot papers began on August 20, with the Commission assuring that all logistical arrangements are on track.
As part of security preparations, the Ghana Police Service has announced that over 600 officers will be deployed on election day. Specialised teams have undergone high-risk operations training and simulation exercises, including drone surveillance and crowd control drills, to guarantee safety across all polling stations.
