The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Ayawaso North, Mr Haruna Mohammed Awal, has been confirmed and sworn into office by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, in Accra yesterday.
This was after all 18 assembly members and government appointees who cast their votes during an election conducted by the Electoral Commission as part of the confirmation process voted Yes, signifying their approval of Mr Awal as the MCE of Ayawaso North.
Led by Ms Ocloo, Mr Awal took the oath of office and the oath of allegiance while pledging to serve with all dignity and integrity.
The result was declared by the Electoral Officer at the Ayawaso North, Apostle Tizor A. Watson at the Church of Pentecost, Maamobi Assembly, where the election was held.
It was received with joy by members of the municipal assembly as they sang and danced after the result was declared.
Also, the whole confirmation and swearing-in process went on smoothly as compared to the ones held at the Ayawaso West and Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly the same day, where the nominees were rejected by assembly members who voted against them, leading to confrontation among aggrieved assembly members and observers.
Ms Ocloo expressed gratitude to the assembly members for confirming Mr Awal as the MCE of Ayawaso North and ensuring a smooth confirmation process.
“The Ayawaso North made my day as everything was in order. The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency told me that he will give us 100 per cent confirmation, and he did,” Ms Ocloo said.
She also urged assembly members of other municipal assemblies to emulate the free and fair elections exhibited by the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly to ensure a smooth confirmation process to enhance development at the local level.
“This place, even though we have members of the NDC and NPP here, they almost came together and confirmed the MCE nominated by President Mahama, and that is what we want. I therefore urge the assembly members at the other constituencies to emulate what the Ayawaso North has done,” Ms. Ocloo said.
She advised individuals who were influencing assembly members at the municipal assemblies to vote against those nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to desist from such an act.
“Everybody can not be nominated as a DCE. Definitely, there should be one person. So, the fact that you were not nominated for the position doesn’t mean you should instigate people to vote against the President nominee. Trust me, all the appointees who failed us, we will revoke their appointments,” Ms Ocloo said.
Mr Awal expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in him to serve as the MCE of Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly.
