The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has urged the government to promptly announce the eight regions that have completed the vetting process, allowing their respective Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) to assume office without further delay.
According to the Ministry, a four-stage assessment process is underway, and eight out of the 16 regions have completed their vetting. While the Ministry is pushing for the immediate announcement of these regions, the final decision ultimately lies with the President.
However, officials acknowledge concerns that announcing only the first eight regions may create anxiety among the remaining regions, which could questions about why they have not been included. Despite this, the Ministry remains hopeful that a suitable resolution will be found.
Speaking to Citi News, the sector Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, attributed the delay in the appointment process to the overwhelming number of petitions received, which required careful review by the committee. He emphasized that despite this challenge, the process has been handled efficiently, making this the fastest government formation in Ghana’s history.
“…As we speak, the national vetting is ongoing at the Local Government Training School, but the eight regions that have completed the process should be announced so that we can proceed with their endorsement while rolling out the remaining candidates. However, some people argue that announcing only eight regions may cause anxiety among the others.
“I believe a solution will be found. The last administration took nine months, but we do not even want to spend three months. The remaining eight regions will be completed before the end of the month.
“Initially, the process was supposed to end by March 4, but its commencement was delayed due to necessary petition reviews. This is the fastest government formation in Ghana’s history,” he stated.
