The Nigerian president's office has raised eyebrows with its claim that the West African country enjoys the lowest cost of living on the continent.
That was what a special advisor, Bayo Onanuga, said on Sunday as he dismissed criticism from a political rival who had said President Bola Tinubu's economic policies were only making life harder for Nigerians.
According to Numbeo, the online cost-of-living database, Nigeria does have a top score for affordability. But that's not out of all 54 nations of Africa, as only 23 countries on the continent were surveyed.
Nigeria's national ranking will offer little comfort to its citizens - who are battling record inflation rates on basic foods and essentials, the loss of fuel subsidies, as well as a weak currency.
