The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has said the defection of some of its members to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would not affect the fortunes of the party in the 2024 general elections.
The party said their defection was an opportunity to strengthen the rank and file “towards winning the 2024 general elections.”
The defectors, all members in the Bono Region, switched their loyalty to the NDC on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
A statement issued and signed by the party’s Communications Director, Felix Mantey, said the defectors included the Regional Chairman, Sanfaa Lucious.
“We have also taken note of the activities of the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who has made recruiting PPP officers to join his party his objective,” it said.
The statement said the party was bothered about the defection “because politics was an endeavour of numbers.”
It said, however, that it was impossible to cater for the needs of every member and as such some individuals would fall by the wayside no matter how much support, empowerment and encouragement they received from the PPP.
The statement said the party will announce a new leadership in the Bono Region in due cause, adding: “Those in the NDC, setting traps here and there to catch our members, must know that there are consequences for such actions.”
The PPP was formed by Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom in 2012 and he contested the 2012 general election as the flag bearer, with Brigitte Dzogbenuku as his running mate.
It polled 64,267 popular votes, thereby making it the third largest party and the second largest opposition party in Ghana.
In January 2012, the party submitted an application to the Electoral Commission for registration in accordance with the Political Parties Act.
