The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is warning of a "horrendous humanitarian crisis" unfolding in Afghanistan.
Officials say the year is set to be "extraordinarily difficult", with the effects of war and drought linked to the climate crisis putting put one-third of Afghanistan's population at risk of severe or acute hunger.
Speaking from Kabul, WFP country director Mary-Ellen McGroarty told the AFP news agency her staff would remain in Afghanistan.
She said the situation was already "dire", with analysis indicating that 14 million people are at risk of malnutrition, including two million children.
"As the conflict has escalated right across the country, farmers are unable to harvest the land, they're fleeing from their homes," she added.
