Amhara militia have supported Ethiopia's federal troops, who last week declared a unilateral ceasefire and pulled out of Tigray's regional capital Mekelle and dozens of other towns.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed initially said the withdrawal was a strategic move, but he later confirmed it was to avoid further casualties.

The conflict has left thousands of people dead and millions homeless.
