The governor of Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province has met health workers in the city of Pemba that was attacked by Islamist militants last month.

Governor Valige Tauabo met the 797 health professionals from the districts of Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia, Muidumbe, Quissanga and Palma who worked in 40 health centres that were vandalised during the attacks.

The meeting discussed ways to continue assisting the displaced people. Health workers said they had traumatic experiences in the districts but were willing to work if security was guaranteed.

The governor said he was touched by the professionals' willingness to work and said another meeting would be scheduled to discuss more issues.

The Tuareg rebellion and a coup in 2012 created a power vacuum in northern Mali that allowed Islamist militants to gain a foothold in the country.

From bases in Mali they now carry out frequent attacks across the Sahel region.
