The joint African Union and United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Sudanese region of Darfur comes to an end today after 13 years.
Troops were deployed to protect civilians and help deliver aid after mostly non-Arab communities rebelled against the government in Khartoum.
Security forces and their mainly Arab allies, called the Janjaweed, were accused of committing genocide and war crimes in Darfur. They denied the allegation.
More than 3,000 people were killed in the fighting.
Most of the rebel groups in the region signed a new peace deal with the government in October.
