The defeated Gomoa West MP, Alexander Abban has suggested that he was let down by his party ahead of his loss in the 2020 polls.

Mr. Abban, who won the seat for the New Patriotic Party in 2016, believes the construction of the Gomoa highway would have saved his seat for the governing party.

But he lost to Richard Gyan-Mensah, the National Democratic Congress’ candidate.

He further described his performance as abysmal.

Speaking on The Big Issue, Mr. Abban recalled that he won the seat against all odds because of anger constituents had towards the NDC because of the lack of progress on that road.

“Having won that, I quickly told them our surest bet was to construct that road. We fail, we lose the seat,” he said.

Mr. Abban noted that he was well aware he and not the presidential candidate of the NPP would suffer if the road was not constructed.

“There it is not about the government; it is about the MP under who’s tenure the road gets constructed.”

“Because that place is predominantly NDC, the patience that our people will have for NDC is a little more lasting than the patience they will have for NPP,” he added.

Mr. Abban is so sure the road would have guaranteed his victory in the polls that he said the NPP’s inability to do so “was just like plucking defeat from the jaws of victory.”

“We knew what we had to do which we didn’t do,” he said.

On whether he would make a bid for the seat in 2024, Mr. Abban said: “I don’t think I am so keen about.”

The Gomoa West MP, who doubles as the Deputy Minister of Communications, was one of the NPP’s many casualties in the legislature that saw it lose the record Majority it held in 2016.

The party dropped from 169 seats to 137 seats in 2020 after a slew of incumbents lost their seats.

The NDC also has 137 seats plus, there is an independent candidate who was voted into Parliament.
