New Patriotic Party (NPP) Executives in Sissala West District of Upper West region have called for the removal from office the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Mohammed Zackaria Bakor, after levelling several accusations against.
The constituency executives with polling stations’ officials and party elders at a News briefing last Friday accused the DCE of; single-handedly awarding contracts, conflict of interest, engaging in profligate expenditures and building mansions with public funds.
Constituency Secretary and Spokesperson for the Executives, Mr Abdul Rauf Zini alleged that the DCE within two years of assuming office had put up two mansions located in Tumu and the Brong-Ahafo town of Berekum.
He also claimed Mr Bakor had awarded 14 schools out of 53 schools under the National School Feeding Programme in the District to himself and his immediate families with the most populated ones being allotted to his two wives wedding in recent months.
“This skewed distribution of the school feeding contracts has left in its wake a growing syndrome of despondency among the rank and file of our party,” Mr Zini said. The DCE was also blamed for consistently threatening to sack constituency party officials working in state agencies and departments who disagreed with him on matters of policies, activities and programmes for the development of the district and the party.
Mr Zini described the actions of the DCE as “counterproductive” to government policies of planting for food and jobs, national builders corps and one million one constituency et cetera to reduce abject poverty.
The executives labelled the DCE’s intention as a rehearsed one to alienate party members to enable him to centralise distribution of state resources with the backing of the Member of Parliament of the area, Mr Patrick Alhassan Adama.
“The MP is not visible and accessible in the constituency…the MP does not patronise social functions in the district, this apparent lack of interest in the social events such as funerals is at variance with the culture and values of our people,” Mr Zini said.
The actions of Mr Bakor and Mr Adama were described as “uncomplimentary and affront to the President [Akufo-Addo’s] vision of growth and development of the country and the party in the constituency.” The Constituency executives therefore called for the removal of the DCE and also implored NPP top leaders to call the MP to order to focus on his core responsibilities as a lawmaker.
Malam Karim More, the First Vice Chairman of the constituency, told the Ghana News Agency, a petition has been submitted to the Upper West Regional Minister, but nothing had been done to resolve the impasse. But in a counter News conference on Saturday another NPP group refuted all the allegations levelled against the MP and the DCE as baseless and without any iota of truth.
Spokesperson for the group, Mr Karim Hudu Muah called on the executives to rather initiate moves to reconcile the rank and file of the party since deep cracks developed after the NPP’s last constituency and polling station elections.
"The consistent disagreement with leadership of the Party never prepare for unity. This attitude of the executives should be called to order to at least allow the MP and the DCE the peace of mind to work and develop Sissala West District,”. He added.
Mr Tomy Salifu, Former Polling Station Executive Chairman for Sorbelle Polling Station ‘B’ told the Ghana News Agency: “We were all together in 2016, but the time we were going to the constituency elections, some names were deleted”.
“Look! My welding shop was destroyed, but we are all one and we are ready for peace”.
