He said the cry for the creation of the proposed Savannah Region has been long overdue, hence the need for the youth to come together and campaign for the needed votes required for the creation of the proposed region.

Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I, made the call at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo over the weekend when leaders of the Gonjaland Youth Association paid a courtesy call on him as part of their stakeholder meeting on the creation of the proposed Savannah Region.

He said the creation of the region would ensure equitable distribution of resources and a more developed decision for accelerating development as well as economic progress that would create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth.

"The Gonjaland Traditional Area is well-endowed with untapped natural resources and it is well known for its tourism potential to generate foreign exchange for development that deserves to be a region on its own", he said.

He said the people of the Gonjaland Traditional Area has demonstrated the need and substantial demand for the creation of the region at the various public hearings held with the Commission of Inquiry on the proposed regions.  

He said the government has demonstrated its commitment on the creation of the regions and assured that his outfit and the people of the Gonjaland would support government to succeed in the creation of the Savannah Region. The Commission of Inquiry into the creation of regions recommended government to create new regions including the proposed Savannah region after holding various public hearings based on petition received by the government.

In all, government received six petitions to create additional regions including Ahafo and Brong East from the current Brong Ahafo Region, two from the Northern Region, namely North East and Savannah Region.Others included Western North and Oti regions curved out the Western and Volta regions respectively.

The Electoral Commission is expected to hold a referendum in the regions where 50 per cent of the people in these areas have to vote in the referendum demanding a 'Yes' vote  for the creation of the region.At least 80 per cent of the registered votes cast must respond in favour of the creation of the said regions to be created by government.
