A ringleader in Brazil was sentenced on Wednesday to 29 years in jail for murdering a judge in 2003.
William Herbas Marco Camacho, known as "Marcola," who headed the so-called First Capital Command gang, cannot appeal the decision because he
is a recidivist and has poor criminal records, according to Sao Paulo judicial officials.
This was the first conviction of murder for Marcola, who has been imprisoned since April 2005 when he ordered a massive riot in Sao Paulo
prisons which resulted in a wave of urban violence that ended up with more than 100 deaths.
The jury later found that he was responsible for the murder of judge Ali Machado, who was shot to death at close range by four men in 2003, as he
left the Justice Forum in the city of Presidente Prudente in Sao Paulo province.
Machado had been in charge of criminal enforcement for 10 years and was the prison inspector in the region. Marcola will probably face two other trials for murder in April 2005.
