Mr Godfried Asamoah, a Deputy Director at the New Juaben Municipal Education Directorate, has called for efforts from teachers and parents to find ways of addressing falling standard of English among pupils.
He said since English was the bedrock of all other subjects in Ghanaian schools and it would be in order if Ghanaians got involved in getting solution to the problem.
Mr Asamoah was presenting supplementary readers and pre-school learning materials to selected primary schools in the New Juaben Municipality under DFID Tranch One at Koforidua on Saturday.
He said a greater number of Junior High School (JHS) students continued to fail the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as a result of their inability to understand the questions and also how to answer them.
Mr Asamoah said the Ghana Education Service (GES) had therefore taken the responsibility to distribute as many books as possible to schools to encourage the children to read widely.
Mr Paul Ofori-Attah, Eastern Regional Co-coordinator of Basic Schools, stressed the need for a good foundation at Kindergarten and Primary levels and urged teachers manning those areas to realize the important roles they play.
