The Spanish Red Cross has donated relief items and equipment worth 124,000 Euros to the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) as part of a one year project which ends this June, 2009.
Ms Rocio Fischer, the Spanish Red Cross Delegate to Ghana, Togo and Nigeria announced this when she presented some of the items to the Volta Region branch of the GRCS in Ho on Thursday.
The items included blankets, mosquito nets, cooking wares, plastic buckets and containers, cartons of bar soap, mats, which could cater for 200 families. Ms Fischer said 150 volunteers were trained in disaster response management under the Spanish Red Cross's Regional Project for West Africa.
Mr John Atisu, Disaster Management Co-ordinator of the GRCS, said Volta and Upper-East Regions would receive 40 percent each of the items and equipment while the remaining 20 percent would go to the national headquarters of the GRCS.
He explained that the two regions were selected as beneficiaries based on an assessment which indicated that they hosted several refugees on regular basis as a result of conflicts and natural disasters like floods.
Mr Gershon Dzokoto of the GRCS, Volta, said the items and equipment would put the region in a stronger position to respond to disasters appropriately.
