Yaw Asante, a 35-year-old trader, has been granted a GH¢300 bail with one surety by the Asamankese Circuit Court when he appeared before it charged with stealing four sacks of cassava.
Asante, who pleaded not guilty, would re-appear on November 19, 2008.
Prosecution told the court that the complainant, bought a cassava farm at Obomena about two months ago, which she had been harvesting.
She harvested four sacks of cassava valued at GH¢68 and carried them to the roadside to be transported to Accra for sale the next day.
The prosecution said on November 1, this year at about 0200 hours, the complainant had a telephone call that somebody had stolen the sacks of cassava.
She therefore rushed to the spot where she had packed the cassava but on nearing the place she spotted Asante in the bush re-loading the foodstuff into smaller carriers.
On seeing her, Asante took to his heels but he was given a hot chase and arrested with the help of other persons and handed over to the police.
During investigation, Asante refused to give statement, saying he reserved it for court.
He was therefore charged to appear before the court.
