Students have been urged to refrain from acts that could lead them into contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) including the deadly HIV/AIDS.
Dr Bortier Nignpense, Principal Medical Officer at the Ghana Health Service, who made the call advised students to avoid promiscuous activities and pre-martial sex in order to free themselves from STDs.
He said the use of condoms was not the safest way to reduce the prevalence rate of the HIV-AIDS.
Dr Nignpense made the call during an HIV/AIDS prevention campaign for students of the Ashaiman Presbyterian Junior High School.
The programme, which was organized by the Tema Youth for Christ (TFY), a Christian non-governmental organization to sensitize the students on the dangers and prevention of the disease, was on the theme: "Prevention and Behavioural Change Communication."
Dr Nignpense urged students to rather concentrate more on their books instead of indulging in acts that would deny them of their future aspirations.
Mr Abraham Sanni Thomas, the Board Chairman of the TYC said a survey conducted by his outfit between September and October this year in 25 Junior High Schools in the Tema Metropolis has shown that out of 1,889 respondents 14 percent of the males and nine percent of the females have lost their virginity.
Reverend McClean Kumi, a pastor of the Tema Joint Church asked the students to abide by schools' rules and regulations to enable them become responsible future citizens.
