A Sekondi District Magistrate's Court on Monday convicted Abraham Lebi, a driver, for assaulting Mercy Tawiah, a bread seller at Anlokrom near Takoradi and damaging her dress made up of NPP colours.
Lebi, who is also a galamsey operator pleaded guilty to assault and causing damage and was remanded to re-appear on November 17 this year for sentencing.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Richard Boatey, said at about 9.00 a.m. on October 16 this year, Mercy left her house at Mpohor to sell bread at the galamsey site at Anlokrom.
He said Mercy who was wearing a dress sown with New Patriotic Party (NPP) colours was hooted by a group of people on the way.
ASP Boatey said at the site, when Mercy attempted to pass by the accused, he violently pushed her and warned her not to try to pass where he was standing.
He said Mercy insisted on passing by and the accused got hold of her dress and tore it with a cutlass.
ASP Boatey said the accused left Mercy half naked and she made a report to the Police.
He said in his cautioned statement Lebi admitted the offence and pleaded for forgiveness and after further investigations, he was charged with the offence.
