Miss Cynthia Anima Boadu, the Bono Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has commended Ghanaians for their spirit of patriotism and nationalism.
She said the love for the nation Ghanaians exhibited during the 69th Independence Anniversary celebration was encouraging, urging them to extend such a spirit of love towards development activities to advance national progress.
As the nation observed the Ghana Month, Miss Boadu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani that voluntarily displaying national pride during the independence celebration was highly inspirational.
She said pride of Ghanaians was manifested through the widespread wearing of the national colours of red, yellow and green as well as souvenirs, saying that attitude was a sign of growing love for the nation.
Ms Boadu said: “That is a wake-up call for all of us. For some time now, this is the period we noticed that individually people are wearing our national colours voluntarily and that is encouraging”, praising Ghanaians for that growing spirit of patriotism.
She noted that many Ghanaians were patronizing the national colours as well as putting up locally made products like beads, kente cloth and smock.
Nonetheless, Ms Boadu said patriotic expression ought to go beyond dressing in national colours and paraphernalia during commemorative occasions, saying that: “It’s a good thing to celebrate our culture through dressing, but the focus should not be on that alone”.
She urged Ghanaians to demonstrate such love for nation through responsible behaviour, like protecting the environment, rejecting corruption and supporting national policies and programmes that advance progressive development.
Ms Boadu said patriotism also ought to be reflected in citizens’ dedication to their professional work and duties, saying that: “One of the duties we have as citizens is to work diligently in our chosen occupations”.
She said if individuals began to work diligently at their various workplaces, the development of the nation could be brought under the next level and urged the citizenry to participate actively in governance and the democratic process.
Ms Boadu concluded by urging Ghanaians to embrace a sense of responsibility and good conduct, working together to push-forward national development.
