The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will on Thursday, October 23, hold a public hearing for chiefs and residents of the Keta and Ketu South Municipalities on the proposed Keta Port Project.
According to the EPA’s Deputy Director, Ms Doris Dushie, the meeting aims to sensitise the affected communities on the project’s potential impact on their livelihoods and provide an opportunity for them to seek clarifications and express concerns before construction begins.
She said the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) had notified the EPA of its intention to develop a port at Kedzi in the Keta Municipality. Following a review of the environmental impact assessment, the EPA deemed it necessary to engage local stakeholders due to the project’s far-reaching implications.
Ms Dushie explained that the hearing would feature presentations on the project’s scope, location, and likely effects, including dredging and land reclamation works that could lead to the relocation of heritage sites, churches, and the Kedzi Community Vocational Institute.
She emphasised that the public hearing seeks to address these challenges, present mitigation measures, and ensure transparency while giving community members the chance to contribute to decisions that will shape the project’s implementation.
