The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has warned teachers and other leaders in educational positions of authority who abuse young people that the government would not hesitate to apply sanctions against those who violate the sacred trust placed in them.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teachers Prize ceremony in Ho in the Volta Region, the Vice President underscored the pivotal role educators play in shaping the nation’s future.
She described teachers as “architects of possibility” but cautioned that their position of trust comes with the highest responsibility.
“As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy,” he said.
“The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not hesitate to apply sanctions to those who violate this trust.”
Subsequently, she expressed concern about growing reports of violence and indiscipline in schools, adding that the Ministry of Education and the leadership of the Ghana Education Service would deal decisively with attacks on teachers, especially physical assaults.
She however stressed that leadership cannot ignore instances where teachers or authority figures themselves are responsible for abuse.
“Transfers are not punishment, and they should never be used as such,” he said,
“Leadership cannot ignore those teachers and others in positions of power who abuse our young people,” he said,

The 2025 Ghana Teachers Prize was held on the theme: “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education.”
It brought together educators, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the country to celebrate the dedication of teachers and reinforce the collective responsibility to safeguard and empower the nation’s young learners.

The Vice President paid a glowing tribute to the country’s teachers, describing them as “architects of possibility”, and the backbone of the nation’s development.
She emphasised that teachers are not only conveyors of knowledge but also guardians of discipline, character, and values.
“Our children look up to you not only for knowledge, but also for character, discipline, and values. In every corner of Ghana, our teachers are the architects of possibility. They create entire visions with chalk and transform classrooms into launch pads for the future,” she said.
The Vice President announced that the government would revive Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to strengthen community involvement in the upbringing of learners.
She also assured that the government would deepen collaboration with teacher unions to address sector challenges and also support the National Teaching Council to regulate professionalise the teaching profession to raise standards.
“The government greatly appreciates the level of collaboration between us and our teacher unions thus far, especially our frequent meetings and social dialogue,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the challenges facing the education sector, and paid glowing tribute to teachers across the country for their creativity and commitment.
She underscored the critical link between teacher dedication and national growth, adding that “the talents, skills, and attitudes of our educators drive the 24-hour economy agenda and accelerate our overall development.” She called on teachers to continue serving with integrity, stressing that the nation recognises those who choose “service over selfishness, sacrifice over comfort, and nation-building over personal gain.”
