The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a high-level security team to the Savannah Region to assess the situation following recent communal clashes.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the IGP’s delegation from the National Police Headquarters will meet with chiefs, opinion leaders, and community leaders to explore measures to restore calm.
The Police said the visit forms part of efforts to intensify security in Sawla, Gbiniyiri, Giniri, and other affected communities.
Reinforcement teams, working in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and other stakeholders, have already been deployed to the area.
“We urge all parties to remain calm and work with the security teams to ensure lasting peace in the area,” the Police Service appealed.
At least five people were confirmed dead and six others injured in a violent land dispute at Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the district. Three of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
According to local authorities, the clashes broke out on Sunday morning after a disagreement over a parcel of land.
