The Western Regional Fire Command has launched an Anti-Bushfire Campaign and inaugurated a team of 60 fire volunteers in the Jomoro Municipality to support firefighting efforts in rural communities.
The Western Region recorded 22 bushfire incidents in the first two months of 2025, raising concerns over a worrying trend compared to 2024, when the region recorded a total of 39 bushfires throughout the entire year.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 17, the Western Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service Emmanuel Bonney noted that measures are being put in place to tackle the issue.
“More efforts into education have been channeled into the bushfire sector. We are doing more education in the rural areas and training five volunteers to augment our work. Where we are not visible, the five volunteers we do that. Hence, the launching of a regional at bushfire campaign.
“…We have about 14 fire stations and we have fire tenders in almost all the 14. We have mpohor that has been handed over to us, we have men there we don’t have fire tender there. We have market circle in Takorad0i – make shit market – that place we don’t have fire tender. Apart from the all the places in the districts that we are covered, we have our fire attendants, and we are working.”
Bonney further cautioned the public against actions that could inadvertently contribute to more bushfires in the region.
