The Ghana Italian Women Association (GIWA), in collaboration with its partners, has donated about 500 school tables to 10 basic and senior high schools at Axim and its environs in the Western Region.
The Grimaldi Shipping Line and the MEWE Nii Amaa Ollennu Foundation supported the donation, facilitated by Nana Osei Nkwantabisa, the Nkosuohene of Lower Axim, and the Lower Axim Traditional Council, aimed to enhance the area's education.
Beneficiary schools included the Axim Senior High Girls, Akonu-Domunli-Agyan M/A, Dr Bemish Basic, Anglican Basic, Axim Methodist Basic, Apewosika M/A, Axim Roman Catholic Basic, Allasunah Islamic Basic, Dadwen M/A, and Ankyinyin M/A schools.
Nii Amaa Ollennu of the MEWE Nii Amaa Ollennu Foundation said the donation was part of efforts to supplement the country's educational sector shortfall.
Education, he said, was the backbone of the future generation and it must be prioritised for them to reach their goal of becoming valuable members of society.
"I entreat every student to aim for the best in all their academics and refrain from all forms of acts that will jeopardise their chances of achieving their desired aspirations," he said.
He commended the partners for facilitating the shipment of the desks from Italy to Ghana to ensure the success of the programme.
Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Asamoah, the Nzema East Municipal Coordinating Director of Education, commended the benefactors and the traditional leaders for the assistance to the schools, which addressed the municipality's desperate need of school furniture.
He assured the contributors, particularly Nii Amaa Ollennu, of the Assembly's continued involvement and assistance in future initiatives.
Nana Amo Meizah, the Ninfahene, Lower Axim Traditional Council, who represented Awulae Attibrukusu III, Paramount Chief of Lower Axim, lauded the donors for the gesture.
He eulogised the Traditional Council's two decades relationship with Nii Amaa Ollennu for furthering the Council's development objectives, emphasising some key contributions in health, education, infrastructure, and human development programmes.
