Ghana is among 51 countries in the world currently participating in this year's Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, India.
The 38th edition of the Mela, which commenced on February 7, will run until February 23, 2025.
It is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs.
Occupying a place of pride on the international tourist calendar, more than a million visitors throng the Mela, including thousands of foreign tourists.
Ghana is represented by the National Commission on Culture (NCC), under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts with 20 representatives from the various Centres for National Culture across the country.
Leader of the delegation, Mr Gilbert K. Guba, Director Finance and Administration, NCC, said it was a unique event and the largest crafts fair in the world that showcased the richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms and cultural fabric of India.
"It is a platform for artists across the globe to showcase their culture and talent and engages visitors in traditional folk dances, musical shows, and puppet skits."
He said the Ghanaian delegation to the Mela was fully sponsored by the Indian government from visas, tickets, accommodation, feeding, and transportation to the Mela grounds.
Madam Nana Adobea Sarpong, Deputy Director, Cultural and Creative Arts Directorate, NCC, and Team Leader, said the Mela aims at promoting handicrafts, exports, lesser-known crafts and rural crafts.
She said it was also to celebrate cultural diversity, share history, promote heritage crafts, tourism, cultural performances, and food.
Madam Sarpong said Ghana began participating in the Mela in 2019 with the aim of showcasing dances, culture, and heritage while branding Ghana. "We also have a stand exhibiting our products."
She appealed to the government to support the team in subsequent years to be able to achieve the purpose of participating in the extraordinary fair.
Some highlights of Surajkund Mela include arts and craft shows, cultural extravaganza, workshops and live demonstrations, open-air theatres, shopping paradise, and nightly entertainment. There are also Kids zones with special activities and rides for children.
