According to the GPRTU, road tolls generate crucial revenue for road maintenance, construction, and upgrades.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Awilo Attito, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Volta Regional GPRTU, highlighted the union’s willingness to embrace the policy, provided the funds are utilized effectively.

“It has come to our notice that the government through the Roads and Highways ministry has intended to reintroduce road tolls, we welcome the idea, but the revenue generated from the tolls must be used well to maintain and repair roads for the safety of users,” he said.

Mr Attito also pointed out that tolls previously played a role in reducing road congestion by discouraging unnecessary trips, ultimately helping to prevent accidents and loss of lives. He urged the government to allocate a portion of the revenue towards road safety measures such as speed cameras, improved street lighting, and enhanced emergency response systems.

“Government must make sure that revenues generated from road tolls should be properly used to provide funding for new infrastructure projects, such as new roads, bridges, tunnels among others. They should be ready to render an account annually,” they added

The union also plans to engage with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure adequate education and awareness for drivers and road users before the policy takes effect.

He appealed to drivers to accept the reintroduction of road tolls and comply with road regulations to avoid penalties. He also urged the government to engage transport unions whenever fuel prices are adjusted, allowing for proper fare reviews to support their business operations.

Additionally, he advised drivers to uphold professionalism, particularly during the upcoming Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Several drivers in Keta shared their views with GNA, expressing approval of the policy while urging the government to ensure that toll revenue is used to repair bad roads and address other pressing national concerns.
