Kidney specialists and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have successfully performed the area’s first kidney transplant, marking a significant medical breakthrough and offering new hope to individuals battling kidney disease.
The historic procedure, conducted through a collaboration between the Kidney Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi, saved the life of a man in his mid-forties who had struggled with kidney disease for five years.
After undergoing dialysis for about a year, the patient opted for a kidney transplant following consultations with medical experts at the centre.
Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a consultant nephrologist and the lead specialist for the surgery, described the achievement as a major step forward. He disclosed that the cost of the first transplant was approximately $25,000, with future procedures expected to range between $30,000 and $35,000.
Encouraging kidney patients to remain hopeful, Dr. Tannor assured them of his team’s commitment to performing more transplants to improve lives.
“This is something we are hoping will continue, and it has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he stated.
This milestone marks a crucial advancement in kidney care in Ghana, reducing reliance on dialysis and making life-saving treatments more accessible.
